Who are the Bible People?
Our beliefs and practices are taken directly from the Bible. This is why, despite our localized, autonomous structure, Churches of Christ across America can be counted on to have the same core values. For example, we believe in the inerrancy of scripture; that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three persons in one being; that Jesus is the Son of God who was sacrificed for the sins of all humankind; that water baptism is necessary to forgive sins and to be added to the Kingdom of God; that the Gospel message must be preached; that the poor must be protected; and, that our children must be provided with a moral foundation for life, which is the one taught by the scriptures.
Churches of Christ have existed since the beginning of Christendom. After Jesus had been crucified, rose from the dead, and was taken up into Heaven, his followers banded together in small groups all over Judea to worship him as the Son of God. As these groups, or churches, grew in size and number, they were directed by the Apostles as how to organize and govern themselves. Simply stated, this biblical process is the same one that Churches of Christ use today.
Who are the Bible People?
We have already identified the term “The Bible People” as an old-time, friendly nickname for members of the Churches of Christ, but we admit it doesn’t go far in telling you who we truly are. Honestly, we are so eager for you to know us that it might be better to begin by first telling you who we are not. You may be surprised at what you learn!
Core Values
The Churches of Christ have no world or national headquarters, no diocese network, no regional/state/county controllers. They are totally autonomous, and this means that each congregation’s leaders interpret scripture as best as they can and apply them to their church as they see to be fit and proper. However, there are some core values you may expect to be congruent in the majority of the congregations of America’s Churches of Christ.
Good News!
You may or may not have heard this already, but there is good news for all of us who continually fail to measure up to the righteousness of the Holy God – and that is, literally, all of us. God loves us so much that He gave us a way to be with Him forever through His Son, Jesus! He wants everyone to hear this news and come home to Him in Heaven. Would you like to hear it?
